Illegal Dumping

A significant amount of money, time and effort has been spent in recent years cleaning up the island. Unfortunately, a minority persist in the practice of illegal dumping of household waste/materials. There is no excuse for dumping household waste when the following services are available:

• A very good fortnightly waste collection service provided by Sharkey Waste.
• Removal of bulky household goods can be arranged with Sharkey Waste.
• Bottles/Aluminum cans may be recycled at the bottle banks situated at an comharchumann yard.
• End-of-life electrical goods can be brought to an comharchumann yard & a collection service for same is available.

It has been made clear by An Roinn & Donegal County Council that no further funding will be available for the collection and removal of illegally dumped waste from the island. Please make use of the waste disposal services that are available.

Overall Development Approach:

Thank you for your entry into this year’s TidyTowns Competition. Congratulations on your increase of points on 2008. It is clear that you feel that this competition is of great benefit. You seem to work well with other organisations. Your communication is good too. Your blog-spot is very useful and a good way of keeping the community at home and away up to date.

The Built Environment:

The Glen Hotel was looking very clean and bright and the lawn was well kept. The old Coast Guard Building looks very poor. A mural here might improve the appearance. The Ionad Seirbhísí Teanga looked very well. The Baile Saoire and all of the associated buildings looked extremely good. The Údarás building looked well and was much in use (for classes) on day of visit. The national school was also in use and looked bright and fresh. A satellite dish has been added since the adjudicator’s last time on Árainn Mhór. The grounds of the
secondary school looked really well. The Post Office looked well as did the shop and hostel opposite. The lighthouse looked super on this sunny day.

Landscaping:

The shrine is well kept. The Árainn Mhór/ Beaver Island monument is very unusual and was admired. The associated works here are good. There is still no information on the board here. There is lovely planting at the secondary school, especially the roses. The work at the Baile Saoire was much admired. The front area of the Comharchumann looks very good. The new name stones and planting here were admired.

Wildlife and Natural Amenities:

The circular walking route brings the walker past some lovely habitat areas. Plants such as bog cotton, asphodel, sphagnum mosses and tormentil were abundant. The plan to provide information on wildlife for visitors is a good one and is overdue.

Litter Control:

Some litter and fly-tipping was noted. This was very unlikely to be caused by visitors. The fact that this was visible from way marked routes that the island promotes is very poor. The litterbin beside the lighthouse had been opened and rubbish was strewn about.

Waste Minimisation:

Well done for your various waste minimisation initiatives. Your blog-spot has details of the survey and study in which you’ve been participating. This is a very positive move. Well done on hosting the composting workshop. Is it known what percentage of households do compost? The bring banks were spotless, well kept and with a very nice information board.

Tidiness:

There was no information on the board at the viewing point to the north of the island: There was no namesign on the secondary school, only a forbidding Do Not Enter sign. The ‘Ais Picnic’ sign at the lighthouse is barely legible. The bin and the Leadhb Gharbh sign both looked well. The new playground looks great, especially the climbing frogs!

Residential Areas:

The standard of maintenance and upkeep of private houses was high and there were some great examples of this.

Roads, Streets and Back Areas:

Árainn Mhór lends itself very well to walking and cycling and as there are so few cars it is very safe. The Slí Árainn Mhóir information signs are extremely good. However, it is felt that the walking routes are a little confusing in places and could be clarified with a couple of extra signs.

General Impression:

Árainn Mhór was seen on a beautiful summer day and the natural aspects of the island were spectacular. The walking routes are excellent but some should be clarified. Your idea for wildlife information and signage is good and should be acted upon. Also in need of action is the litter and fly-tipping which detracts greatly from the landscape. Your group is active and communicates well. There are many attractions on Árainn Mhór and it will no doubt continue to attract visitors in great numbers. The work that you are doing will maximise the
experience for them as well as improve the quality of life for the residents of this lovely island.

Mórtas Ceantair Dhún na nGall 2009 – Donegal Pride of Place 2009

Pride of Place is an all-island competition which is directed towards recognising improvements by local communities to create civic pride in their area. The competition focus is on people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their area.

Arranmore’s application in this years competition was short listed and subsequently selected by Donegal County Council to represent Donegal County Council in the 2009 Pride of Place Competition, island’s section. Judging will take place on the island in early July. An comharchumann is seeking the assistance of volunteers to prepare for the visit of the judges. All help will be much appreciated. Rannpháirtíocht sa tSeirbhís Bhailithe Bruscair- Waste Participation Study

Le ceithre mhí anuas, tá an comhlacht comhairleacha RPS i mbun taighde chun rannpháirtíocht pobail Árainn Mhóir sa tseirbhís bhailithe bruscair a mheas. Thaisteal ionadaithe ó RPS timpeall an oileáin gach coicís le roinnt míonna anuas i gcuideachta solathar na seirbhíse bhailithe bruscair. Beidh torthaí an tsuirbhé ar fáil ag RPS i gceann coicíse.

During the past four months, RPS Consultants have been conducting a study to ascertain the level of participation of islanders in the waste collection service on the island. Each fortnight, in recent months, a representative of RPS has accompanied the refuse collectors during their rounds. The results of the study will be finalised by RPS within two weeks.

Waste Management Plan - Plean um Bainistiú Dramhaíola

Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhóir, assisted by funding from Údarás na Gaeltachta is carrying out a Waste Awareness Programme on Arranmore Island. As part of the programme, RPS were commissioned by Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhóir to prepare a report to set out the waste management arrangements for the future sustainable development of the island and recommend a strategy to suitably and legally manage the island's waste arisings in a way that is sympathetic to the local environment

The recently prepared Waste Management Plan proposes further improvements that will address potential growth in waste arisings and substantially increase the level of waste recovered and recycled. Measures proposed will reduce the quantity of household waste disposed of, and increase the quantity that is collected for recycling. This will represent a sustainable future for the people of Arranmore.

Arranmore Island Integrated Development Plan 2008-2013
The Arranmore Island Integrated Development Plan was launched in September 2008. The plan sets out nine development themes. Waste Management is one of them.

The Waste Aware Campaign led by Comharchumann Árainn Mhóir has been funded by Údarás na Gaeltachta. The aim of the Waste Aware Campaign is to bring to an end the practice of illegal dumping and to promote the use of the waste collection service and recycling services available on the island. An information booklet, detailing best practices in relation to waste disposal has been prepared and a copy will be distributed to each household in the coming week.

Disposal of End-of-Life Vehicles

Owners of end-of-life vehicles have an obligation to ensure that their vehicles are disposed of legally. Donegal County Council will impose fines on anyone who disposes of their vehicle(s) in an illegal manner. Vehicle owners can now avail of the disposal service by contacting Thomas Costello on 087 8608776. Vehicles can be collected from anywhere and they must be intact. A fee of €40.00 per vehicle will apply. Upon disposal, vehicle owners will be issued with an end-of-life certificate.

Disposal of End-of-Life Vehicles

Owners of end-of-life vehicles can arrange for the removal and disposal of vehicles with Dungloe Car Breakers.
It should be noted:-
Vehicles can be taken to Burtonport where Dungloe Car Breakers will collect at no charge. Alternatively, should a minimum of 4 individuals decide to organize a removal, DCB will come to the island to collect the vehicles. Car owners are responsible for ferry charges. Following disposal, each owner will be provided with a Certificate of Destruction. For further information, contact Martin O'Donnell on 087 6167807.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Cleaning agents, including bleaches, waste medicines, batteries, antifreeze, herbicides, weed killers, pesticides, adhesives, old paints, paint stripper, aerosols, inks, waste oils.

Please bring items to: Dungloe, Shore Car Park. From 9.:00am to 12:00 noon on Saturday October 11th 2008.

Community Composting Workshop

Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhóir intends to host a community composting workshop in conjunction with Suzanne Tinney, Donegal County Council Waste Awareness Officer. Further information and date of workshop will be posted in due course.

Tax Relief on Bin Charges

You can claim tax relief on the bin charges you pay each year. Tax can be reclaimed on annual charges and pre-paid tags, receipts are not necessary. To make your claim, call into your local Revenue Office or Lo call 1890 777 425 and quote your PPS Number.

Arranmore Island Refuse Collection

Increase in Waste Collection Charges

As you are aware, Donegal County Council has arranged with Sharkey Waste Disposal to provide a waste collection service for Arranmore Island. This service has been running successfully since June 2007.

We wish to inform you that the charges for this service will increase, with effect from 1st October 2008. The new charges will be as follows:

• Bags – The special refuse bags will increase to €4.50.

• Bin Labels – The special labels will increase to €7.50.

You should note that these charges will remain in place until the end of 2009, at which time they will be reviewed.


Bags and labels can be purchased from the following outlets:

• Comharchumann Oileán Árainn Mhóir Teo;
• Phil Bán’s Shop.
• Neil Gallagher’s Shop

Note: Only waste that is presented in the red Sharkey Waste Disposal bags or in 240-litre wheelie bins with the proper label attached will be collected.

Time and Frequency of Collection

The collection will continue to take place on Friday mornings.

The service will be provided fortnightly, except for the months of July and August, when the collection will be weekly.


Other Waste

You are reminded that the each householder and business is responsible for waste arising in their homes or on their premises.

Those with large volumes of waste that cannot be accommodated in the normal collection service, such as construction and demolition waste, must have it removed by a permitted waste collector. The Council can provide a list of permitted collectors/skip hire companies on request.

You should also note that Sharkey Waste Disposal is considering the introduction of a service for bulky wastes, such as items of furniture. Details of this service will be available shortly.

Anyone found responsible for the illegal disposal of waste will be prosecuted.
